Undertow
Original fused glass art block | 4" x 4" x 2"
 
Part of my collection of small, textured fused glass works, Undertow combines sea blue and turquoise tones with layered geometric shapes and flowing black lines. The surface has an organic quality, while the raised glass elements add structure, depth, and dimension. A standout detail is the transparent sea blue glass standing on edge, with its top painted gold. It creates strong lines across the composition and adds a subtle metallic accent.
 
The black glass lines are another important part of this piece. I lay these glass elements over the textured surface before firing the piece a second time in the kiln. As the glass heats, it melts and drapes over the underlying texture in its own way. I can guide the placement, but I never know exactly how the glass will move or settle during firing. That element of unpredictability is one of the things I enjoy most about working with fused glass. A small glass tattoo on the side of the white wood panel echoes the design on the front, extending the composition beyond the main surface.
 
Measuring 4" × 4" × 2", Undertow is a small but dimensional work of art, designed to be displayed on its own or grouped with other small glass pieces.
